Expertise in Quebec’s Far North: new school projects in Nunavik
Jodoin Lamarre Pratte architectes has been designing projects for northern communities since the early 1980s. To date, the firm has taken part in over seventy projects—including housing, education, healthcare, transport and industrial facilities—carried out notably for Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, the Kativik Regional Government and Hydro-Québec. Working in Nunavik involves significant logistical and technical challenges and requires an approach that is sensitive to the realities of the territory. Over the decades, our teams have developed recognized expertise in northern construction, based on methods adapted to extreme climatic conditions and the needs of the communities.
Since the end of 2023, the firm has been working on the design of a new primary and secondary school in Quaqtaq, in consortium with MLS Architectes and in collaboration with Kativik Ilisarniliriniq. Inspired by an umiak—a traditional large Inuit boat made of skins stretched over a wooden frame, used for transport and hunting—gliding across the waves, the school’s volumes are characterized by curves and fluidity. The new building will welcome both elementary and secondary students, each with a distinct entrance and separate circulation paths. Approval has been granted for the construction of this important project for the community of Quaqtaq, which will begin in July.

In the field of education, our team is also participating in the preparation of a bulding analysis for the construction of a new school in Kangiqsujuaq for Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, in consortium with Leclerc architectes. The project under study aims to reduce the shortage of secondary-level space in this village located 10 km from Hudson Strait.
